Sherry Rhoda (Skinkin) McCowan, 57, was born Royalton, Wisconsin to Hilda Miller and James Skinkin. She was the youngest of ten children; Sherry has six sisters, and three brothers. The boys’ were named Merrill, Curtis, and Louis, and her sister’s names are Jane, Lucille, Karen, Shirley, Suzanne, and Muriel.
As a child on the reservation and in Red Springs, Sherry liked to fish, swim, and to go dancing. She attended the Mission School, and later Gresham High School. While she liked music and choir, she didn’t like math classes. One of Sherry’s favorite memories as a child is riding bicycle, and going to Joe Bears in Gresham and eating hamburgers.
Sherry was married to Denver McCowan for 23 years. She has two daughters, named Tammy and Nichole. One daughter lives in Kenosha, and the other lives in Lake Villa Illinois. Sherry also has a grandson named Tyler. She says her daughters and grandson make her very proud.
Sherry lived in Illinois for many years, but now she lives here in the Mushobee Apartments. When Sherry lived in Illinois, she worked at ITT Crane Packing, and ITT Bell & Gosett.
Sherry enjoys visiting with her friends, going out to lunch, being with her children and family, and she likes to travel. She has been to Virginia and Oklahoma. One of Sherry’s favorite places to visit was Virginia because of the beautiful mountains.
When Sherry was asked what advice she’d like to give to the youth in the community, she said, "Stay in school, and get all the education you can."
